Kristol Veach’s Breast Cancer Story
Jul 16, 2024Finding Strength in the Face of Adversity: Kristol's Journey Through Breast Cancer
Kristol's journey with breast cancer is a testament to resilience, hope, and the unwavering support provided by The Hospitals of Providence Oncology Services team. Her story, marked by determination and the compassionate care of our staff, serves as a beacon of inspiration for those navigating similar paths.
As a NICU nurse at the very hospital where she received her care, Kristol had already witnessed the dedication and expertise of the Memorial Campus team. Her connection to the hospital was further deepened by her mother, who had previously received care there too. In 2015, amidst the joyous milestones of family life, Kristol received news that would alter her world. At the age of 31, just before her daughter's preschool graduation, she received a call from her OBGYN to confirm that she was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, HER2 positive. Shock and fear gripped her, but amidst the uncertainty, she found solace in the support of her loved ones and the comprehensive care provided by The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus oncology team.
Kristol embarked on a rigorous treatment regimen, which included chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and surgeries. Despite facing daunting challenges, including hospitalization following her first chemotherapy session, Kristol remained steadfast in her resolve to fight the disease. Balancing her treatment with her roles as a mother and a nurse, she drew strength from her family, friends, and the compassionate staff at Memorial Campus’ infusion clinic. Reflecting on this time, she said, “Looking back, I was constantly having to put on a brave and happy face for everyone around me, even if I didn't feel that way. I knew I had to fight because I didn't want my girls to not have their mother.”
Throughout her treatment journey, the infusion clinic became a sanctuary for Kristol. The dedicated staff not only administered life-saving treatments but also provided unwavering support and empathy. Bonds formed, stories shared, and fears eased, all contributing to an environment of healing and hope.
Among the challenges, there were moments of profound connection and compassion. From the supportive presence of Memorial Campus’ Oncology Director during her first chemotherapy session to the comforting conversations with clinic staff, Kristol found reassurance in the kindness of those around her. Her journey was illuminated by the love and support of her community. From family and friends to colleagues and fellow patients, she found strength in unity. Documenting her journey through dance videos, she inspired others and fostered a sense of camaraderie amidst adversity. Reflecting on her experience, Kristol offers poignant advice to fellow cancer patients: embrace the journey, seek solace in shared experiences, and cherish the support of caregivers and healthcare professionals. Her perspective on life and healthcare has been profoundly shaped by her journey, imbuing her with a renewed sense of empathy and gratitude.
Today, as a cancer survivor, Kristol approaches life with newfound appreciation and purpose. Every milestone, from witnessing her daughters' graduations—her youngest from middle school and her oldest from high school—to the everyday moments of joy, is cherished with deep gratitude. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, love, and compassionate care. This experience has inspired Kristol to be a better person, feeling as though she's been given a second chance. Her role as a nurse has taken on new meaning, as she now possesses a deeper empathy for families and patients, shaped by her own struggles. Kristol is committed to ensuring that the love and support she received from the infusion nurses is felt by the families she cares for.
