Rachel Barraza’s Ovarian Cancer Story
Jul 16, 2024Rachel Barraza: A Triumph Over Ovarian Cancer
Rachel Barraza's journey through ovarian cancer is one of resilience, courage, and unwavering determination. Her story, filled with challenges and victories, serves as an inspiration to all who face adversity.
Rachel's battle began in March 2009, amidst debilitating abdominal pains and irregularities in her menstrual cycle. Despite challenges in identifying the cause, Rachel's persistence led her to a specialist who uncovered the truth – ovarian cancer. Memorial Campus became the battleground where Rachel faced her diagnosis with determination.
With the guidance of her oncologist, Dr. Saldivar, Rachel underwent surgery in July 2009 to remove her left ovary, followed by a period of recovery and reassurance. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when the cancer returned, prompting a new round of chemotherapy treatment at Memorial Campus Infusion Center. With unwavering strength, Rachel faced chemotherapy head-on. Following her recovery, she maintained regular three-month checkups with Dr. Saldivar, striving to resume her life with perseverance and hope. Despite facing setbacks, Rachel remained resolute, postponing chemo to preserve fertility while continuing her academic pursuits and earning her physical therapy licensure.
Throughout her treatment, Rachel encountered numerous side-effects, from fatigue and nausea to the emotional toll of losing her hair, “The most touching moment was when fifteen friends and family members shaved their heads with me when I lost my hair. It is so special to know you are not alone,” shared Rachel. Yet, through it all, she found solace in small victories and supportive measures, embracing yoga, meditation, and the unconditional support of her loved ones. The infusion clinic became Rachel's sanctuary, where compassionate care and support awaited her at every visit. The staff, led by Oncology Nurse Navigator, Charlie, became Rachel's second family, providing comfort, encouragement, and a sense of belonging amidst her treatment regimens.
This past February marked thirteen years since her last bout with cancer. With the assistance of fertility specialist, Dr. Noble, Rachel and her husband welcomed their daughters, Hope and Mia Faith, into the world, counting their blessings and remaining grateful for each day of health and happiness.
Reflecting on her battle, Rachel offers sage advice to fellow cancer patients – lean into the resources available. Rachel's experience as a cancer survivor has reshaped her outlook on life, leading her to develop the T.E.A.L. Fund for Hope and become an active facilitator in women's cancer support groups.
Rachel's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of compassion and support. Her dedication to raising awareness for ovarian cancer and supporting fellow survivors serves as a beacon of hope for all who face the challenges of cancer. Her story reminds us that with courage, determination, and support, anything is possible.
