The Hospitals of Providence Performs El Paso’s First Robotic Spine Procedure

Aug 8, 2024

EL PASO, Texas The Hospitals of Providence East Campus is excited to have performed El Paso’s first minimally invasive spine procedure using the ExcelsiusGPS robotic system.

The ExcelsiusGPS is a revolutionary robotic navigation platform combining a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate alignment during spine surgery.  The surgical robot guides the robotic arm to a specific region of the spine, similar to a planned route on a GPS and can then accurately place screws using the instrument.  The robot is designed to allow the surgeon to make one or a few small incisions and have greater reach during surgery.

“We are incredibly excited to be advancing the way we perform our spine procedures here in our region,” said Dr. Andrew Cleveland, Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, who performed the first procedure. “This technology helps us more accurately place screws, reduces the surgery time, and also reduces the recovery time for our patients – that’s a big win all around.”

The new robot allows surgeons at The Hospitals of Providence East Campus to provide the most up-to-date technology and skills to patients who need spine surgery. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, patients generally experience less pain after surgery, have a quicker recovery and shorter length of stay in the hospital and need less medication.

“Our team is committed to advancing the care we provide our patients and helping to reduce their time in the hospital and improve their overall recovery time,” said Tasha Hopper, Chief Executive Officer for The Hospitals of Providence East Campus.  “We are proud to be the first hospital in El Paso to offer this advanced technology working to improve the delivery of care.”
