Hemospray is among the latest FDA-approved device to treat bleeding
EL PASO, Texas — The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus is now the first healthcare provider in the region to provide patients with a new non-surgical way for doctors to stop bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.
Hemospray is a device which contains a blend of powdered minerals that can be applied as a spray and administered non-invasively, causing blood to coagulate and helping to stop bleeding in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. When the powder comes in contact with blood, it absorbs water and forms a gel that covers the bleeding site.
“Hemospray provides a non-surgical option for patients with GI bleeding that could not be treated with our usual endoscopic therapies. Having this therapy made available locally is a testament to the commitment of the Hospitals of Providence in providing our patients the newest therapies for gastrointestinal emergencies,” said Dr. Emmanuel Gorospe, MD, MPH, FACP, FACG, an interventional gastroenterologist and co-editor of the book, GI Endoscopic Emergencies.
Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract is a leading cause of morbidity and is associated with an estimated 20,000 deaths per year in the U.S., according to Cook Medical, the makers of the newly approved, Hemospray.
