The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus First in El Paso to Use New Device for Treating Brain Aneurysms
Oct 27, 2021EL PASO, TX – The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus is the first hospital in El Paso to use a new technology to treat brain aneurysms.
The Pipeline Flex Embolization Device with Shield Technology diverts blood flow away from the aneurysm and reconstructs the diseased section of the parent vessel.
“We are excited to be improving and advancing the treatment for patients suffering from aneurysms and requiring intervention,” said Dr. Gustavo Rodriguez, Vascular and Interventional Neurologist and the Medical Director for Interventional Neurology at the Sierra Campus. “This device with the new shield technology allows our team to more easily treat a patient’s aneurysm, while also improving the overall outcome.”
A brain aneurysm is a weak bulging spot on the wall of a brain artery, which over time causes the wall to gradually become thinner causing the wall to swell outward. This pressure if left untreated may cause the aneurysm to rupture allowing blood to escape. A ruptured brain aneurysm commonly requires advanced surgical treatment.
According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated 6.5 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysms, or 1 in 50 people. Brain aneurysms are most prevalent in people ages 35 to 60, but can occur in children. Women are more likely than men to develop a brain aneurysm.
