Sep 19, 2018

EL PASO, Texas — The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus, earns recognition as meeting the guidelines required for treatment of the most serious stroke events.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification, granted by the accrediting agency DNV, recognizes hospitals that have met specific metrics in the full spectrum of stroke care including, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education.

Comprehensive Stroke Centers offer state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff and training to receive and treat patients with the most complex strokes. Being recognized as a Comprehensive Stroke Center is the highest level of stroke certification available.

“Being designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center is a monumental achievement for the Sierra Campus,” said Nicholas Tejeda, Market Chief Executive Officer for The Hospitals of Providence. “We are absolutely committed to providing the highest level of care and treatment to stroke patients – patients who could be our neighbors, friends and family. I commend every member of our dedicated team for their steadfast focus to delivering the care that enabled the Sierra Campus to earn this designation.”

Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability as noted by The National Stroke Association. Stroke is a brain attack occurring when blood flow to the brain is cut off, causing brain cells to be deprived of oxygen and begin to die. A stroke can cause permanent loss of speech, movement, and memory.

“When a stroke occurs, where you go and how fast you get there matters. Having trained specialists on-site, 24/7 with the expertise to treat the most complex of stroke cases, ensures better outcomes for our patients and their recovery.” said Dr. Rakesh Khatri, Assistant Professor in the department of Neurology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, specializing in Vascular Neurology and Interventional Neurology and current Medical Director for Comprehensive Stroke Services at Sierra Campus. “This has been a result of tremendous collaboration among multiple disciplines and a vision to improve stroke care in the community.”

The Sierra Campus offers a comprehensive program to provide and care for stroke patients through the entire treatment plan. From the time a stroke patient arrives in the emergency room, a dedicated team is ready to begin life-saving care. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides stroke patients with advanced rehabilitative care and expertise to promote recovery and increase functionality. Additionally, the Sierra Campus continuously offers stroke prevention education to the community through various community events and hosts a Stroke Support Group for caregivers and survivors the second Wednesday of every month.

In addition to its certification for comprehensive stroke, Sierra Campus was recently recognized with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit also celebrated the accreditation by the Commission Accreditation of Rehab Facilities (CARF).
