EL PASO, Texas — The Hospitals of Providence is proud to announce Market CEO, Nicholas Tejeda has been presented with the University of Kansas Medical Alumni Association 2018 Early Career Achievement in Medicine Award.
Tejeda was presented with the award at the Alumni Awards Luncheon held on Friday, October 5, 2018, at KUMC. He is an alumnus of the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City, Kansas where he earned his Master’s in Health Services Administration.
“The KU Medical Alumni Association is proud to recognize Nico for his outstanding leadership and dedication to equitable access to high quality patient care” said Jordann Snow, Director of Alumni & Community Relations for KUMC. “In addition his contributions to his profession, it is worth noting that he is the first Hispanic – and the first non-physician – to receive this particular award. It is our honor to celebrate Nico’s successes and the difference he is making in healthcare.”
Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Tejeda and his respective teams have experienced success in several communities during his career. However, his career has truly flourished in El Paso, Texas, and continues in his role as Market CEO for The Hospitals of Providence.
“On May 4, 1923, an 18-year-old young man crossed the border into El Paso,” Tejeda said. “He came to America literally with $2 in one pocket and the other pocket presumably filled with hopes and dreams. El Paso welcomed him, he became a butcher and eventually raised a family in Kansas, espousing hard work and integrity. That young man was my grandfather. With that butcher knife in hand, he established the foundation upon which I stand today. I feel it is my obligation and privilege to honor his legacy.”
Tejeda’s interest in healthcare came from his father, a pharmacist in the family’s pharmacy in Wichita. Tejeda graduated with honors from Wichita State University and earned his Master’s in Health Service Administration from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007.
As Market CEO, Tejeda now oversees a network that includes five hospitals and nearly 5,000 employees. He leads an incredible group of leaders who are focused on improving and expanding healthcare for the El Paso region. Since his arrival to El Paso in July 2015, Tejeda has served as CEO at multiple hospitals, most notably for the Transmountain Campus, a new teaching hospital in Northwest El Paso.
Tejeda is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association. He was also recently named to Becker’s Hospital Review list of “90 Healthcare Leaders Under 40” and was named as the 2017 Robert S. Hudgens Young Healthcare Executive of the Year, an award granted by the American College of Healthcare Executives.
