As Medical Director for The Hospitals of Providence Weight Loss Center East, Michael D. Lara, M.D. is a recognized leader in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Dedicated to transforming lives through surgical excellence and compassionate patient care, Dr. Lara has built a distinguished career serving the El Paso community and beyond.
Dr. Lara earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas, where he developed strong clinical and surgical expertise.
He pursued specialized fellowship training in advanced laparoscopy, bariatric, and minimally invasive surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, advancing his skill in innovative surgical techniques.
Dr. Lara holds active medical licensure in:

He is certified in BLS and is Board Certified by the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lara is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Lara is Robotic Intuitive Certified and has been at the forefront of robotic surgical innovation in the region. In 2012, he performed the first Robotic Single-site cholecystectomy and the first Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy in El Paso, establishing himself as a pioneer in robotic minimally invasive surgery.
