Cancer Navigator

Claudia Sanchez, RN, serves as an Oncology Patient Navigator, dedicated to guiding patients through every phase of their cancer journey. Her role includes providing comprehensive information on treatments, managing medication and treatment side effects, and connecting patients with vital resources such as financial assistance and support groups. Claudia ensures seamless care continuity from pre-diagnosis to post-treatment completion, overseeing follow-up appointments and cancer surveillance programs.

"In my role as a cancer navigator, effective communication is key. When discussing treatment options, prognosis, or end-of-life care, I emphasize active listening and empathy,” shares Claudia. “I clarify any misconceptions, provide resources for further learning, and follow up to answer questions. My goal is to empower patients with knowledge so they can make informed decisions."

With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Claudia has augmented her expertise through memberships in the Oncology Nursing Society and the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN). She actively facilitates the Women’s Cancer Support Group with Rio Grande Cancer Foundation, and she participates in organizations such as Active Living After Cancer, and Power of Pink.

Claudia's career journey into cancer navigation was shaped by her 19 years of experience with hospice patients. Witnessing firsthand the positive impact of supportive care, Claudia was inspired to assist cancer patients, guiding them to informed decisions and empowering their journey.

Looking forward, Claudia anticipates the evolution of cancer navigation to become more specialized and crucial in patient care. Committed to the field, she aims to ensure tailored support that enhances the overall healthcare experience for patients.
